Mike sent me a picture of his bike and asked if I’d be interested in featuring it. Suppose I could squeeze it in… :)

Sometimes I’ll write a little intro to the bike but I’m not going to do that this time as Mike has done it all for me.

Don’t just look at the pictures ya lazy bastards, have a read…there’s a lesson in it for ya.

What to do when recovering from an accident after your Yamaha ‘single’ bucked you off ? After all, seven months convalescense is a stretch, and apparently those 500cc ‘singles’ can’t be trusted. The solution? Build a SIX !

Highlights

I stumbled on this ‘82 CBX, and managed to get it for a great price. It had issues, but was still a, registered, runner.
Headlights are back-up lights for a semi-trailer ($10.00 at the local auto parts dealer. I never claimed to be a big spender).
‘05 & ‘08 GSXR 1000 front & rear ends, respectively.
Rear subframe fabbed from my wife’s lawn chair ( I’ll deny it if you mention it to her). On that score….the seat angle isn’t as extreme as it looks. It’s just that the, modded, tire display rack I fabbed for a race stand holds the rear up really high.

Tail light is a modded brake light off the wing for a Toyota Sienna.
Gas cap came from a $10.00 GSXR gas tank I discovered on E-bay. The tank was useless with the exception of an aftermarket, billet, cap. I cut out the filler area and grafted it onto the CBX tank.
Breather hose on the tank? Its an oil line from my Ducati ( it supplied oil to the heads on my 748).
Breather hose from the engine cases, that goes to my Coke can catch tank? Courtesy of the plumbing department at the local hardware store. Its a braided line for a dishwasher. Honest, you can’t make this stuff up.
There’s a modded Yoshimura resonator in place of the original DG 6-1 muffler. Only, you can’t really describe it as a ‘muffler’ now!
1150 big-bore ( I had no choice, the original bores were just too corroded)
Stage 3 Dynojet kit. Oh, and the most diabolically difficult-to-set-up carbs in the universe.
GSXR 1000 rearsets.
The speedo unit in the snaps, a budget on-line item, has been trash-canned in favor of a KOSO replacement. Sometimes, you get what you pay for!
The rear ‘mud guard’ is a combo of modded sub-frame left-over from an old build, and a fibreglass bit I made for the Duc.
In a moment of, misplaced, confidence I decided on doing the wiring harness over myself. If I ever mention that I’m thinking of doing that again, do me a favor and shoot me! In the end, all was well, but getting there? Not so fun.
All the paintwork was drawn up, masked & applied by myself. Some bits, as they hung from my kids’ old swing set, at the side of the house (don’t try this at home folks, these men are trained professionals!)

Is it fun to ride? O M G ! This is, hands-down the most fun I’ve had on a bike. There are limitations, to be sure, but what a blast! Its fun to accelerate up through the gears, only to slow abruptly so you can repeat the process all over. That SOUND is a, major, drug. I thought about doing this build for years, and now kick myself for putting it off for so long.

Funny then how things work out. One minute you’re lying in a ditch, with no idea how you ended up there, which is odd, because after the beating you took you would figure on at least some recollection. The next you’re scooting along on a screaming six cylinder salute to internal combustion.
