Remember Matt’s CX500 from last week?
Well this bike belongs to Grant, Matt’s mate.
It’s a customised Suzuki GR650 (known as a “Tempter” in the USA). A good bike with somewhat dodgy electrics.
If you want to know what the standard bike looks like cover your eyes and click here. As you can see (because I know you peeked) it’s not pretty. You would think that it would be fairly easy to customise it into something that would at least look better than a stock bike right?
Unbelievably, most of the customised GR’s on that google page look even worse…with a few exceptions, namely the Ellaspede EB011. They did a good job but I think I prefer Grant’s version, don’t you?
Anyway, here is a word or two from Grant…
I’ve owned a few different dirt & sports bikes but I wanted a bike with character.
Looked around for a few months for something to customise. Wanted to build a parallel twin but didn’t want to build a “run of the mill’ so a GR fitted the bill. It was a relatively cheap build as I did all the work myself.
Work done
- chopped, fab frame loop, fab seat pan
- shaped and upholstered seat
- relocated wiring
- z50 headlight/speedo
- battery box, pod filters, rejet and tune carbs
- Supertrapp mufflers
- tracker bars
- vintage tyres
- Blacked out wheels, guards and headlight
This was my first custom build, finished Jan 2012, been riding ever since. Took me about 4 months or so of spare time, have since just finished resurrecting and customising a cx500 & currently building an xs1100.
Grant has a mechanical and fabricating background. Coupled with his obvious talent for building a good looking bike and it’s no surprise he’d be happy to build you a bike. If you’re on the east coast of Australia and would like to speak to Grant, drop me a line and I’ll put you in touch.

You’ll see Matt’s future bikes here so stay tuned.
